# Create a voice agent

> From a template to a working agent you can call, in a few minutes.

## Create the agent

**1. Open Voice agents**

In the dashboard, click **Voice agents** in the sidebar. With no agents yet, the templates show right away; otherwise click **New agent**.

**2. Pick a template**

Each [template](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/templates.md) fills in a name, a prompt, a first message, an avatar and a voice. **Start from scratch** gives you a short outline to write your own.

> [!TIP]
>
> From the **Avatars** page, **Use in a voice agent** starts a new agent with that avatar and its suggested voice.

**3. Fill in the prompt**

On the **Agent** tab, replace every `[placeholder]` with your own details. A badge counts the placeholders still left. See [Write a good prompt](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/prompting.md).

**4. Review the other tabs**

The defaults work for most agents. Change the avatar or voice, conversation settings, tools or webhook if you need to.

**5. Click Create agent**

The agent is created and **Share & embed** opens, with its share link and embed code.

**6. Make a test call**

Click the phone button on the preview card (on phones, **Test call** at the top). Allow the microphone and talk to your agent.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Test calls are billed from your balance at the voice agent rate, like any other call. They use the agent's **last saved** version.

## The editor

The editor has seven tabs. A preview card on the right shows the avatar, the voice and a summary: how the call opens, turn-taking, interruptions, tools, maximum length and whether the webhook is on.

| Tab | What you set | Guide |
| - | - | - |
| **Agent** | Name, first message and prompt | [Write a good prompt](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/prompting.md) |
| **Avatar & voice** | The avatar, the voice and speaking speed | [Avatar and voice](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/avatar-and-voice.md) |
| **Conversation** | Turn-taking, interruptions, noise reduction, reasoning and maximum call length | [Conversation settings](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/conversation-settings.md) |
| **Tools** | The built-in **End call**, and your own tools | [Tools](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/tools.md) |
| **Webhook** | The post-call webhook and the signing secret | [Post-call webhook](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/webhooks.md) |
| **Share & embed** | Taking calls on or off, public or private, share link, embed code | [Share and embed](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/share-and-embed.md) |
| **Calls** | Every call to this agent, with transcripts | [Calls and transcripts](https://docs.talking-avatar.dev/voice-agents/calls.md) |

### The Agent tab

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Name** | Shown to callers on the call page. Up to 120 characters. Required. |
| **First message** | What the agent says as the call starts, such as *Hi, I'm Maya. What can I help you with today?* Leave it empty to let the caller speak first. Up to 500 characters. |
| **Prompt** | Who the agent is, how it speaks and what it knows. Up to 20,000 characters. Required. |

## Save changes

* Click **Save changes**, or press <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>S</kbd> (<kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>S</kbd> on Windows and Linux).
* **Discard** reverts to the last saved version.
* *Unsaved changes* shows next to the buttons while you have edits. Reloading or closing the tab asks before losing them.
* If a field on another tab is invalid, saving takes you to it.

Changes apply to calls that start after you save. Calls in progress carry on with the version they started with.

## Turn an agent off, or delete it

* **Turn it off:** on **Share & embed**, switch off **Taking calls** and save. Its share link, embeds and private links stop taking calls until you turn it back on.
* **Delete it:** click the trash icon at the top of the editor, then **Delete agent**. Its share link and every embed stop working right away. Its usage stays in your history, and its calls stay listed as *(deleted)*. This can't be undone.

## The agents list

**Voice agents** lists every agent with its avatar, voice, status and when it was last edited:

* **Live:** taking calls. **Private** also shows when only link holders can call.
* **Off:** not taking calls.

**Copy link** copies a public agent's share link. Below the list, **Recent calls** shows the latest calls to all your agents.
